American People Deserve Answers on IRS Targeting

Representative Steve Daines today joined the House in passing legislation calling on Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) recent practice of targeting of conservative groups.

Daines also joined the House in approving legislation holding former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress for repeatedly refusing to answer questions from a House committee on the IRS targeting.

"Today's votes mark a long-needed step toward restoring the trust of the American people," Daines stated."The IRS practice of targeting groups because of political or personal beliefs is unacceptable and demonstrated an outrageous violation of the American people's trust. The Obama administration may be unwilling to hold Lois Lerner and IRS officials accountable for these unacceptable practices, but the American people deserve answers. It's time that those responsible are held accountable for this blatant abuse of power."
